50 Connaught Road South
Hong Kong

50 Connaught Road South is a 28-story office tower rising above an important edge boulevard in Hong Kong that has harbor views. The architectural design of the office tower has a strong commanding presence along this major boulevard. The tower is designed as a series of stepped glass planes that give the office tower a wonderful scale.

These glass planes give the office tower a dignified presence and are designed to cascade down to announce the entrance into the office and retail lobbies at grade level. Crucial to the building's design was invoking a sense of lightness in the architectural design. 50 Connaught Road is trying to reinvigorate the curtain wall to produce an office tower that possesses great strength when the glass planes overlap and combine into one structure.

The tower's structure and materials further distinguish it from the immediate context of 50 Connaught Road South. By invoking the classical aesthetic of bilateral symmetry along its façade the design is unified. This is achieved with a single column that rises up the entire height of the building, from the base to the projecting spire. This symmetry is enlivened and energized by a rich use of glass layers in the façade. At the base, the exterior is split into two halves that are reintegrated as a single broad bay applied in this first setback. A series of glass overlaps along the sides of the main shaft enhance the feeling of immateriality that is central to the building’s design concept. The overall building form combines the overlapping planes of glass into a compositional vertical thrust. Hopefully this will provide a unified design that has great movement.
