The Park Belvedere
New York, New York

This 35-story residential tower rises at the corner of Columbus Avenue and 79th Street, opposite the Museum of Natural History. While designed only two years after the design of the Columbia, the Park Belvedere exhibits a far stronger sense of context and a far more evocative use of materials than was evident in the strongly modernist idiom of the designing of the Columbia. Because of the Park Belvedere’s relationship with Central Park West, the Residential Tower’s silhouette has been designed to recall the romantic profiles of the great residential street’s landmark towers such as The San Remo, The Beresford, The Century, and The Majestic.

The building’s 150-foot granite and masonry street wall allows it to blend in with its 15-story neighbors. The design establishes the residential entrance on West 79th Street and preserved the continuous retail space along Columbus Avenue. The design also incorporated a trellised structure at the top of the 15-story base to help in the transition to the tower. This transition unites the base with the tower. There is a trellis transition at the top of the tower to receive the lantern which has a night lighting system.

Materials that harmonize with the surrounding architecture were chosen, such as the rose-colored masonry tower, to be similar to the color of the museum of Natural History and incorporates punched windows, recalling the architecture of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The Park Belvedere has corner windows at every corner of the base and tower and open up magnificent views of the new Rose Museum, as well as unparalleled views of Central Park.
