Trump Parc occupies one of the most prestigious sites in New York City along Central Park South at Sixth Avenue. This building was originally the Barbizon Plaza Hotel designed by architects Murgatroyd and Ogden, and was one of the city’s major new hotels when it opened in 1930. The site’s current incarnation is the Trump Parc after a reorganization of the structure from a 1,700-room hotel to a 350-unit residential tower complete with all new air conditioning, heating system, plumbing, electricity, windows, and elevators.
A number of other new features were incorporated into the renovations in order to transform the hotel into a modern luxury apartment building, among them low-rise and high-rise elevators to serve the residents. Also, the design called for such new amenities as a health spa, below-grade parking and a retail area at street level.
In another important change, the building’s lobby entrance was moved from West 58th Street to Central Park South, in order to assert the residential tower’s presence with Central Park. The existing masonry walls were also restored and replaced with enlarged windows. Additionally, new limestone base for the building was added, further emphasizing its new stature as a luxury residence, rather than a hotel.
Above all, the most striking change was the treatment of the lantern at the top. For this feature, Art Deco columns were installed in order to create a crown for the project. Visible by night, it transforms the Trump Parc into a landmark that is visible from many different points in the city.
