The 56-story Trump Palace, at 640 feet, is the tallest residential building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Its panoramic views extend along the length and width of the city and give this skyscraper a very strong presence that is visible throughout midtown Manhattan.
The building resides on a one-acre site between East 68th Street and East 69th Street on Third Avenue. The Tower’s broad base features a number of low-rise shops and townhouses that preserve the existing streetscape. This creates a sense that it is truly part of the neighborhood from which it emerges. A densely landscaped public plaza opens along East 68th Street and is a public amenity for the neighborhood to enjoy as well as the residents in the complex.
As important as the exterior, however, was the design of Trump Palace’s interior, which features a variety of ways to live in the complex, from 5- story town houses on the side streets to a rich variety of residences culminating in full floor residences at the top of the residential tower. This gives a very rich choice of ways to live in this residential complex.
The tower is composed of a graduated series of setbacks, enlivened by colored masonry, and crowned by a crenellated lantern that is illuminated at night and serves as the structure’s most defining element. The step-like gradations were inspired by the RCA skyscraper in Rockefeller Center. The installation of light colored stone throughout the structure achieves two objectives. The four setbacks that occur between the base and the lantern are accentuated and the color helps to define the setbacks in the tower.
